Today was a special and landmark day for our family. We arrived at the courthouse just before 1:15pm to find several of our friends gathered outside the courtroom. I don’t know why we would have any nervousness, but talking with the various people there helped distract from the emotional excitement of the event. At around 1:30, the bailiff opened the doors and was surprised to see such a large crowd gathered. We started filtering through the doors, and our family of five shuffled over to the tables at the front with comfy chairs. Our lawyer waited on the screen over Zoom.

“All rise,” a voice announced as the judge entered the room. Shortly after, the judge permitted everyone to sit down as she took her own seat.

I was aware beforehand that we would be asked a few simple, formal questions. Our lawyer and I had spoken yesterday about the questions, so I was prepared. However, Liisa was asked questions first, and she answered them all very well. I was then asked if I agreed with her answers, to which I (of course) conceded. Before we knew it, the judge signed the adoption decree, and the hearing was over.

We took the opportunity to get a photo of our family with the judge, and I took a quick snapshot of our gracious audience as we turned to leave. After filing the documents and obtaining our copies, we rushed home to where friends had gathered for the following donuts and hot apple cider.

October 15 is the day that Andrew officially changed his name to ours, and today is exactly one year after we arrived at his orphanage in the Philippines to bring him home. God is good, and we are forever grateful.

O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

Psalm 34:8
